Piran police received several reports on Sunday around 2am of bangs resembling gunshots in one of the villages in the hinterland of the Piran municipality. They sent several patrols to the scene. In front of a house from which the shots were reportedly heard, they tracked down a 44-year-old Croatian citizen. He came out of the building only after repeated calls, and for the safety of the procedure officers put handcuffs on him.

During a security check he had no weapon on him. Around the house, officers found several empty shell casings.

The man then became increasingly agitated, resisted the procedure and insulted the officers. As he did not calm down even after warnings, he was detained. During the search, officers seized a nine-millimetre pistol with a magazine and additional ammunition.

A check showed that in Croatia he holds a valid permit to own a weapon, but not to carry it.

After consulting the on-duty state prosecutor, police found no criminal offence and therefore treated the incident as a misdemeanour. The man was issued a fine notice (plačilni nalog) for breaching public order, the weapon and ammunition were seized, and proceedings were also launched under the weapons act. This was announced by the Koper Police Directorate.

The sources do not say which village the incident took place in, how many shots were fired, how large the fine is, or whether anyone was in danger. Police wrote only that bangs resembling gunshots were reported and that empty shell casings were lying around the house.
