Four referendum questions, but you can reject a law on only one

To reject the amendment to the parliamentary inquiry law, at least 339,706 voters must vote against it. The other three questions are only advisory.

At seven in the morning, 2,984 regular polling stations opened in Slovenia, along with 88 omnia polling stations, intended for those voting outside their place of permanent residence. Abroad, voting is taking place at 30 diplomatic and consular missions. Polling stations close at 7 pm.

Voters are deciding on four questions, but not all four count equally. Only one is legislative: the amendment to the parliamentary inquiry law, which the National Assembly (DZ) adopted on 26 May 2026. The question reads:

"Are you in favour of the law amending and supplementing the parliamentary inquiry act, adopted by the National Assembly at its session on 26 May 2026, coming into force?" (translated)

The law is rejected if a majority of those who cast valid votes vote against, and if at least one fifth of all eligible voters are among them. According to the latest figures, that means at least 339,706 votes against.

The other three questions are advisory. Voters are answering whether the mandatory payment for Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV Slovenija, the public broadcaster) programmes should be abolished, whether the right to cash social assistance for able-bodied people with no objective obstacles to work should be conditional on doing community service, and whether the right to vote in local elections should belong to citizens of Slovenia or another EU member state, but not to citizens of third countries. Voting is done by circling "for" or "against".

Before Sunday, N1 asked the government how it would act on the results of the advisory referendums, both with a majority for and a majority against. It published the answers in separate articles.

Practical advice: bring an ID document. For each referendum you sign the electoral register separately, then receive your ballots. You choose how many referendums you vote in, but you can only visit the polling station once, the State Election Commission (DVK) warns. Election silence applies until voting ends. Reports of violations until 7 pm are taken by the duty service of the Inspectorate for Internal Affairs on 080 21 13.

Early voting drew 75,401 voters, or 4.44 percent of all eligible voters. RTV SLO reports that this is the second highest turnout in early voting at referendums in the history of independent Slovenia. It was higher only in July 2021, at the legislative referendum on the amendment to the water act.

The DVK will publish turnout data after 11 am and after 4 pm. It will publish the first partial unofficial results after 8:30 pm. The results of the legislative referendum will be known first, then those on social assistance, on voting rights in local elections, and finally on abolishing the RTV contribution. The day after Sunday, ballots sent by post from within the country will be counted, and a week later those from abroad and from diplomatic and consular missions. The DVK must establish the final result by 30 October at the latest.
