MP Aleksander Reberšek handed Luka Mesec a transparent envelope with scissors during the show Tarča (the current affairs programme on national broadcaster RTV Slovenija) and urged him, if he wants to dispel all doubts, to "cut off three hairs" and send them for testing. A hair test can show the presence of cocaine even several months after use, whereas the detection window for a urine test is considerably shorter.
Mesec did not accept the challenge and did not submit three hairs for testing. Instead, he answered with a question: "Should I get undressed too?" With that, he did not respond directly to the concrete proposal of a hair test. Reberšek's challenge did not call for undressing, but for taking a few hairs for laboratory analysis.
Such an answer does not, of course, prove in itself whether Mesec uses cocaine or not. Nor did it dispel the doubts that led Reberšek to challenge him. Had Mesec agreed to the sampling and an appropriate laboratory analysis of the hair, the result could have offered additional information on possible exposure to cocaine in the period that such an analysis can cover.
